The Carelink alarm is a product which qualifies for the Government's VAT Relief scheme for the disabled and those with long-term illnesses. This means that if you meet the criteria, you won't pay any VAT when you purchase an alarm plan.

Today's blog post will outline the criteria that both we the provider and you the customer need to meet in order to qualify for VAT Relief.

Qualifying Product Criteria

According to the HMRC website, products which are designed or adapted for a disability qualify for VAT Relief. This is defined in the following way:

"The original intention of the product’s designer was to produce an appliance or equipment solely to meet the needs of people with one or more disability."

The Carelink alarm is specifically designed to help and support those who suffer from long-term health problems and disabilities, whilst in the comfort of their own home. Other products which qualify for VAT Relief include: stair lifts, wheelchairs, adjustable beds, and building work such as ramps and widening doors.

Do I Qualify for VAT Relief?

In order to qualify for VAT Relief you must have a long-term illness, a terminal illness or a disability. A long-term or chronic illness is one that lasts longer than three months, such as arthritis and asthma.

You also qualify if you have a physical or mental impairment that affects your ability to carry out everyday activities, such as blindness and dementia. You will not qualify for VAT Relief if you're elderly but able-bodied, or if you're temporarily disabled through injury such as a broken arm.

Example Conditions

There are a long list of conditions which would qualify for VAT Relief, some of the most common (alongside those mentioned above) among elderly people include:

- Deep vein thrombosis
- Osteoporosis
- Hypertension
- Bronchitis
- Emphysema

Confirmation of VAT Relief

During the ordering process, either online or over the phone, you'll be asked to confirm whether you qualify for VAT Relief. Once your order is complete you'll be sent a new customer form, which has a section on VAT relief. Within that section you'll need to confirm which condition(s) and/or disability you have in order to qualify.

If you are unsure about whether you are eligible for VAT relief you can call our Customer Service Team on 0800 0076 247 who will be happy to help.
